CAFOD launched a four-year private phase of Every Second Counts (ESC) initiative in 2020 to raise £5m to support CAFOD’s protracted international emergency work that does not usually reach mainstream news platforms. Due to its success, we plan to launch phase 2 in April 2024 for a further 4 years to raise a minimum of £7.5m.

This highly influential role will lead the day-to-day management of ESC strategy and operational plans alongside managing and supporting the newly to be formed ESC Fundraising Group.

This role requires a passionate and persuasive individual who can cultivate strong relationships with key influential Major Gift stakeholders including our CAFOD Executive Team and Trustees to help achieve CAFOD’s ambitious fundraising targets.

Key Responsibilities

Strategically guide and project manage Every Second Counts Phase 2 initiative (ESC)

  • Lead the overall initiative and act as the 'go to' and expert reference point within and beyond the MGP team for ESC and its relationship to CAFOD's wider humanitarian response.
  • Work across the MGP team and other CAFOD teams at all levels to maximise cross-collaboration income opportunities. Ensure a small group of CAFOD influencers and donors lead on the ESC Fundraising Group and remain engaged.
  • Using your specialist knowledge in fundraising, deliver and influence the new ESC phase 2 strategy targeting major gift donors. Have a good overview and ensure other donor relationship managers are developing their high-value donor portfolio to give to ESC.

Donor portfolio relations

  • Take the lead, coordinate the approaches and the donation ask to prospective donors and where appropriate with leadership to secure significant gifts for CAFOD’s specialist protracted emergency work.
  • Work across the MGP team to sound out potential donors and influencers for ESC and advise on the strategic approach.
  • Work closely with the CAFOD Executive Team and the ESC Fundraising Group to manage their peer-to-peer support by offering your expert advice.

Working with ESC influential donors

  • Lead on sub-donor segment groups with clearly outlined responsibilities which will include the management of senior staff and volunteer leadership.
  • Work with the Philanthropy Manager (PM) to manage and liaise with key influencers and seek advice on possible approaches to those donors and prospects known to them and how best to engage in fostering the development of these relationships.
  • Identify, engage and lead in establishing potential new ESC influencers for CAFOD.
  • Working with the Head of MGP, establish relationships with CAFOD Trustees and new volunteer leadership to develop supporter networks and to engage donors with our work.

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate will have an excellent track record of managing substantial major giving relationships and project management. A strong team player and an ambitious self-starter you will be able to lead and direct the ESC Initiative, and cultivate relationships with high-value supporters, donors, and influential stakeholders in order to maximise donations and develop long-term donor partnerships to achieve the ESC soft and hard targets.

You will have previous successful experience of generating significant gifts for not-for-profit organisations and experience of developing peer to peer approaches with key stakeholders.

In addition, the essential criteria for the role will include:

  • Proven experience managing major gift relationships and experience of articulating the proposition to donors.
  • Achieved successful income growth strategies with experience or potential to attract donations of £50k and ideally above 6 figures.
  • Strong organisational and project management abilities
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Creative and confident in bringing new strategic ideas to the table.
  • Knowledge and awareness of the field of international development and humanitarian aid environment.

The Regional People Partner – Africa will be responsible for providing HR Partnership and advice across the full spectrum of people management activities including employee relations, organisation design, learning and development, employment law and salary benchmarking to our offices in Africa.

The post holder works alongside a team of People Partners based in the UK who offer peer support to each other in the provision of professional HR Advice and Partnership across the organisation.

The People Partner will work closely with the People Services Officers and be responsible for line managing the People Services Officer - Africa and coordinate the HR Focal Point Network.

They will also work closely with the Recruitment & Talent Partner, Organisational Development Partner, Internal Communications & Staff Engagement Manager, and Safeguarding Advisor. The post holder is line managed by the Head of People Operations.

Key Responsibilities

HR Partnership and Support

  • Working with all levels of management to provide strategic support and problem solving in all areas of human resource management by providing advice and support to managers on a wide range of HR issues through the employee life cycle
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with managers, taking an active and accountable role influencing high level decision making on a range of operational matters.
  • Support managers in design and shaping of teams and jobs including advice on pay and benefits.
  • Ensuring regular communication with managers, building and maintaining strong working relationships.
  • Travel to our Africa Offices (Nigeria, DRC, South Sudan) on a frequent basis to develop local capacity for human resource management in particular providing support for HR Focal Points (HRFPs) with Country Representatives with staff handbooks and local employment law.
  • Undertake salary benchmarking in Africa Offices to ensure our salaries are in line with the market as directed by the Head of People Operations.
  • Coach, support and empower managers to find solutions and implement best practice people management interventions.
  • Chair the HR Focal Point Forum and provide training and mentoring to the HRFP’s as appropriate.
  • Engage with Staff Associations on people matters alongside the Director of People, Culture and Change
  • Ensure safe recruitment practices are consistent across our Africa Offices and in line with the Misconduct Disclosure Scheme and liaise the Safeguarding Advisory Team as and when appropriate.

Employee relations

  • Support team leaders with the management of employee relations, including absence management, performance management, grievance and disciplinary.
  • Support and provide advice to staff on employee relations issues, offering and sourcing interventions (e.g. mediation) where appropriate

Organizational Development

  • Champion organizational learning across all offices in Africa CAFOD by building personal credibility, role modelling desired behaviours and by exercising strategic influence.

  • Lead, manage, develop and support a People Services Officer by championing our purpose and values through, building strong and safe working relationships, setting SMART objectives and conducting performance reviews, nurturing staff career development.
  • Oversee the teams work on contractual administration and correspondence including checking and signing contracts, and other employee correspondence.

The Regional People Partner – Africa will be focal point in the following areas:

  • Mentoring program for the Africa teams ensuring mentors and mentees are following the programme.
  • Coordinating with the HR Focal point on a regular basis on HR related issues at the country level.
  • Travel to our regional offices to conduct HR Audits and recommendations where appropriate.

Key Competencies:

  • Full membership of IHRM (Minimum Bachelor’s degree in HR or related field)
  • Experience of working in an HR advisory role within an international organization.
  • Ability to manage cross organizational projects.
  • Sound understanding of HR processes, including but not limited to change management, organizational development, employee relations case work, resourcing, compensation and benefits, policy development.
  • Fluency in French is desirable however not essential.
  • The ability to travel to overseas offices for 8 - 12 weeks approximately a year including one trip to our UK Headquarters.

The role of the Emergency Programme Officer will contribute to CAFOD’s humanitarian response to the Israeli-Palestinian crisis in line with the agreed strategy, by taking the lead on the day-to-day management of CAFOD-supported programmes and partnerships.

CAFOD’s Middle East core programme strategy takes a partnership approach to community-based peacebuilding, upholding rights and resilient livelihoods, as well as humanitarian response. It covers CAFOD’s programming in Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, the occupied Palestinian territory, and Syria. The new strategy is spearheading a new way of working with greater integration across programmes and teams in the Middle East.

The primary focus for this role is CAFOD’s response to the Israeli-Palestinian crisis primarily in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory with the potential to include Lebanon and other locations as necessary.

Working as a member of the International Programme Group, this role will contribute to CAFOD’s Middle East core programme which is part of CAFOD’s Asia and Middle East region.

CAFOD’s programme work is underpinned by an Integral Ecology programme model, where programme strategies are developed with partners to focus on addressing the causes and symptoms of poverty, inequality, and environmental degradation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Project management and development in line with the direction set by the Middle East Core Programme Strategy and the Israeli-Palestinian crisis response plan.
  • Building and developing effective relationships with Partners
  • Financial management and monitoring of programmes and projects
  • Programme Quality and Capacity Strengthening

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate will have strong experience in development and humanitarian programming in the oPT.

In addition, the essential criteria for the role will include:

  • Familiarity with the Middle East context, especially Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory.
  • Understanding and first-hand experience of institutional funding work/projects, priorities, trends and donor conditions.
  • First-hand experience with a values-based partnership approach (between northern and southern organisations and communities)
  • Thematic experience: Experience in peacebuilding, advocacy and/or resilient livelihoods programming.
  • Experience using programme cycle management tools effectively to deliver work within an agreed programme framework.
  • Knowledge of IT systems, including Microsoft Office and Sharepoint Online
  • Financial management understanding and experience with experience of preparing and monitoring complex budgets.
  • Ability and willingness to travel (up to 12 weeks per year) in all areas of Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory and other locations as necessary, sometimes at short notice and to areas of potential risk.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English. Arabic language skills are desirable for this role however not essential.

CAFOD is looking for an experienced Philanthropy Manager to join our Major Gifts and Philanthropy (MGP) section.

The Philanthropy Manager will lead on five key areas of work including strategy, donor relations, team management, major gifts events and other cross-team activities. They will be responsible for strategic and operational planning, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting to ensure the team meets or exceeds annual targets through an innovative, ambitious, donor-centric approach to major donor fundraising.

This role also works alongside Every Second Counts Appeal (ESC) Lead to support the £5m campaign and ensure that activities are supported to meet or exceed the target and evolve into a mainstream Major Donor emergency programme post appeal.

As this is a significant area of CAFOD’s growth, you will have sound knowledge of high-value major gifts principles and hands-on experience with this specialist form of philanthropic giving.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy Development and Implementation

  • Develop and implement Major Donor strategic and operational plans to meet section targets with a focus on supporters who can donate above £50,000, preferably at six and seven-figure level. This is in close association with the strategic planning for the wider Major Gifts and Philanthropy strategy.
  • Proactively qualify and assign prospects to suitable members of the team depending on the prospect’s capacity, motivations, and engagement. Ensure that each member of the team has an equal workload and opportunity to extend their experience as major donor fundraisers.
  • Develop a strong pipeline of national and international major gift prospects using various methods to identify warm and cold opportunities.
  • Ensure due diligence research of all types (including donor identification, gift declarations, ethical checks and audit requirements) is completed, delegating when necessary.
  • Strengthen CAFODs policies, processes and systems to ensure they are fit for purpose so you will be contributing to policy and process development, as well as systems improvement to ensure our work is measurable, efficient and compliant.

Donor Relationship Management

  • Develop trusted relationships with donors through devising and implementing cultivation, asking and stewardship plans, with a clear focus on securing General Funds (unrestricted and restricted donations)
  • Soliciting significant and principal gifts for agreed specific projects and programmatic themes from your own portfolio - either directly or through an appropriate peer to peer approach.
  • Work closely with the Every Second Counts Lead to ensure major donors’ objectives are coordinated and manage relevant donors and stakeholders.
  • Ensure that best practice is followed with respect to GDPR and safeguarding in relation to prospect & donor information storage, processing, and communication.
  • Oversee event planning by the MGP and the Major Donor team members to ensure they meet fundraising, cultivation and stewardship goals
  • Consistently engage senior staff, trustees, clergy and ambassadors in peer-to-peer major donor programme event opportunities.

Line management in line with CAFOD’s management standards

  • Provide Major Donor team leadership and day to day management for two Major Donor Executives through regular team meetings and other MGP members as required.
  • Hold regular 1:1 meetings to create development plans and review performance.
  • Assess training needs and train staff where appropriate.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience of securing 6 and 7-level gifts and the ability to train and inspire others within the team and beyond to do the same. You will also understand the importance of prospect research and move management to ensure that there is a strong pipeline of new warm and cold prospects.

You will have the ability to lead CAFOD towards engaging leadership, trustees and clergy in our major donor giving, so you will lead on developing the peer-to-peer approach with confidence and maturity.

In addition, the essential criteria for the role will include:

  • Demonstrate major donor and philanthropy principles and operational strategies.
  • Ability to interrogate income figures and interpret data to achieve income growth
  • Written, verbal and presentation communication skills
  • Manage, motivate and develop teams.
